Chapter 23

Surprise Attack

March 10, 2127

Day 166

Winter Haven

Colonel Colin Fox considered the report from the scout shuttle in silence. Captain Watanabe had called Fox from the comm center in the settlement’s Administrative Center building. He was at his quarters next to the main Ranger command post a mile north of the hills that separated the settlement from the open country to the south and was dressing while he listened to Watanabe’s report. She had received the urgent message from the duty comm officer at the terminal who had received the report from shuttle pilot Lieutenant Larisa Markova alerting her that an alien fleet was approaching the settlement from the north and the leading ships would be ashore within minutes. The comm officer and her two techs had then fled the terminal. The transport lander London was now inbound but it would not be able to land at the terminal and load those needing evacuation from the settlement; the main terminal would be overrun before they arrived. Fox would learn later that the comm officer and her two techs had roused the relief transport aircrew sleeping at the nearby Ranger barracks and they had all made their getaway using a bus that had been loaned to the aircrew while they waited for London to come in.

The shaken Fox knew now that his hopes of keeping the settlement of Winter Haven in human hands had been dashed. At least thirty of the alien vessels had been spotted heading towards the settlement from somewhere on the north side of Lake Chun. Each of the vessels carried an estimated seventy to one hundred of the Raagaas and their Jammie overseers with their plasma weapons. At least some of those ships also carried the powerful plasma cannon that would easily destroy an attempt to resist their landing. Those plasma cannons were already well within range of the settlement and more crucially the main landing field.

Fox now realized that the aliens must have landed unseen up one of the rivers that emptied into the lake along its north shore and assembled their vessels without being detected by the recon shuttles that checked the lake shore every day looking for signs of alien activity. Fox cursed himself for not anticipating this possibility. He had sent two scout shuttles around the entire lake every day since the weather had begun to warm up and the lake ice had begun to melt but there had been no sign of any aliens anywhere to the north. One shuttle would fly from the base at Winter Cove around the north side of the lake then south and west to Winter Haven while a second flew in the opposite direction from Winter Haven and back to Winter Cove. They were now a full week into the spring season and Fox cursed himself for not having them look far enough up the tributary rivers. Now the aliens were about to make the Rangers and colonists pay for his mistake. He ordered Watanabe to redirect
